Rotary drilling is used where the investigation of competent rock strata is required, and percussive methods (i.e. dynamic sampling or cable percussive rigs) will not penetrate.

Rotary coring is used to recover lengths of core which can subsequently be logged n details and tested as necessary to achieve the objectives of the investigation. Rotary open hole techniques are also used to ‘probe’ the underlying ground, and provide a quick method of drilling deeper boreholes, for example for the investigation of deep mining activity or other voids beneath a given site.
