Trial pitting, using a mechanical excavator, is a relatively cost-effective method of undertaking an investigation, allowing for exposure of the underlying material to depths of up to 4m in the right ground conditions and with a suitably sized excavator.

Trial pitting also facilitates the completion of various in-situ tests, for example infiltration, CBR and shear strength testing, as well as allowing for the collection of samples for further analysis, such as for contamination or geotechnical testing. Trial pits also provide a means of investigating various other buried features such as historic mine shafts, foundations or solution features.
